The Missing Variable

But using our methodology we dive deeper into culture.

When We Play

2026

Overview
A short documentary exploring the gap between online connection and real human community, and what happens when people stop performing and start showing up.
Approach
We didn’t begin by trying to create content or tell a story. We started by questioning the environment itself. There’s a visible shift in how people engage, but most responses to it still live online, inside the same systems that created the problem. So instead of observing from a distance, we moved closer to the behaviour. We focused on creating a situation where people could interact without the usual pressures of being watched, judged, or needing to present themselves in a certain way. The goal was not to force connection, but to see what happens when the conditions allow it.
Solution

Our process is built around four parts.

Play is where it begins. We create simple, accessible environments where people can participate without needing skill or prior context. The intention is to remove performance and lower the barrier to entry so people can engage more naturally.

Document follows that. We capture what actually happens in these spaces. Not staged interactions or directed moments, but real behaviour as it unfolds. This includes the awkwardness, the hesitation, and the moments where something shifts.

Insight comes from observing patterns in that behaviour. We look at how people interact, where they stay, what draws them in, and what makes them open up. The focus is on actions rather than stated opinions.
